SOUTH HILLS HIGH SCHOOL
Class of January and June 1953

Hello Classmates. Welcome to our website. Established 6/8/09
This website is intended to keep our classmates up-to-date with the committee members, our up coming events, past reunions, missing classmates, deceased classmates, teachers and administrators.

Your computer software may not be able to access the e-mail links for the committee members or the ones at the bottom of each page. So, you will have to "copy and paste" or "type it in".

SHHS - OUR GOOD OLD HIGH SCHOOL - Residents have move into the “new” SHHS building called the SOUTH HILLS RETIREMENT RESIDENCE. The developers have been able to save most of the building and all 106 apartments have been rented. The north side of the building is the main entrance (Eureka Street) to the senior housing and gives a new look to the school while at the same time memorializing where the grand auditorium use to be located. Included are a number of amenities (including a dining/multipurpose room, library, exercise room, and an outdoor terrace/greenhouse and landscaped courtyard). The building with LEED Gold Certification has a cutting edge technology and the ability to produce electric on site. There is a website for more information on rentals, click here >> South Hills High School or call 412-481-8100 and arrange to view the building.

SHHS bounded by Ruth, Harwood, Secane and Eureka Streets has had a long varied history. SHHS opened on April 9, 1917, with 255 students in the ninth grade and 35 teachers. Peak enrollment was 2925 pupils in February 1939. An addition was built in 1925 and in 1969 an annex was completed. Initally, in May of 1915, the Pittsburgh Board of Public Education decided that school was to be called Bailey High School, after the Bailey Family that previously owned the 4 1/2 acre parcel of land that the school was to be built on. The name was formally changed by the School Board in October 1915 to "South Hills High School" because they noted that is what people of the South Hills will call it, no matter what name you give it.
